Placenta Encapsulation

First off, lets briefly talk about placenta consumption (placentophagy) and it’s possible benefits.

Placenta encapsulation is the process of preparing the mother’s placenta for her consumption during her postpartum period. The placenta is washed, steamed or sliced raw, dehydrated, ground, and then placed into capsules. It doesn’t stop there either! The mother’s placenta can also be made into tinctures, salves, smoothies and be used for beautiful prints and keepsakes.

What are the possible benefits of consuming your placenta?

  • To reintroduce beneficial hormones, proteins and other nutrients to the mother’s body

  • A decrease in the risk of “baby blues” and postpartum depression

  • To provide HPL hormone which helps to establish early and healthy milk supply

  • Increased energy

  • A decrease in postpartum bleeding and healing time

  • To replenish B vitamins and iron used and lost during birth

  • To lend the mother a consistent flow of oxytocin long after her birth euphoria ends

3 Common Misconceptions Debunked

Placenta Smoothie?! Doesn’t that taste just terrible?

I only take a thumbnail size amount from the maternal side of the placenta and add it to your blender. I then add a personalized smoothie bag and milk of choice. These smoothie bags usually consist of oats, spinach, banana, berries, greek vanilla yogurt, ground flax, chia seeds and milk or milk alternative. I make sure to blend very well. It’s now sounding more appetizing right? I pour the smoothie into a cup, serve it to you in bed, wash your blender and say goodbye. I leave you with not only a delicious nutrient dense drink, but one that will deliver you a small dose of oxytocin to signal your body to restore and repair.

Ewe. Placenta salve

I use about 7-10 capsules of your dehydrated placenta to make this healing salve.  Contrary to what some may think, this salve is not red but is a beautiful soft hue of yellow. I slowly infuse the powder into nourishing oils, beeswax and healing plants that I either grow myself or source locally. By request, pure lavender essential oil may be added for it’s extra healing properties. This soothing salve can be used for just about anything from your baby’s bum rash and your sore perineum to your cracked nipples and your baby’s cradle cap.

I’m afraid I will burp up placenta after taking my capsules.

I always suggest to my clients to take their capsules with food or juice and never on an empty stomach. Everyone’s digestive tract is unique to them, so following these suggestions can definitely help to eliminate “burping up placenta.”
